Titan Boat

NASA's Curiosity rover landed successfully on Mars in August, but to reach Saturn's largest moon, Titan, scientists are going to need a bigger boat â€" literally.

As reported by Space.com, a group of Spanish researchers have proposed a mission to Titan that would explore the moon's bodies of water via a special space boat.

A floating probe known as the Titan Lake In-situ Sampling Propelled Explorer (TALISE) would land in and explore Titan's largest lake, known as Ligeia Mare, for up to a year.

TALISE is a joint effort between engineering firm SENER and the Centro de Astrobiología in Madrid, Spain. According to Space.com, details about the project are still being worked out, but the proposal was presented last month at the European Planetary Science Congress in Madrid.

Titan, meanwhile, has an almost Earth-like atmosphere - a very cold Earth, that is. Temperatures regularly hit 289 degrees Fahrenheit, Space.com said. The moon's water and the possibility of a subsurface ocean, however, make some believe that living organisms could survive there.

In the U.S., NASA has been studying Saturn and its moons since 2004, when the European Space Agency's Huygens probe reached the planet after a seven-year journey. The mission was originally scheduled to end in 2008, but it was extended once through 2010 and again through 2017.
