Question by b3n22: What are the metal things that say "gas" or "water" on the sidewalks in front of houses in Philly? I've also seen some that just look like little square covers with holes (for ventilation?) The water and gas ones usually have a nut on them that I'd assume you unscrew to open it. I thought they'd be some sort of gas or water access, but I swear I've seen some where the covers off and it's just a bottomless (looking) hole. Also, utilities seem to access gas and water by ripping up portions of the street :). that's where the meters are, so they know how much you have used, so they can charge you.
Keep your hand OFF the stuff........The covers are for safety!!!!! If you really want to know, call them and ask for an explanation....
They are not covering the meters. There are exterior shut off valves down there. A special tool is used to reach down and turn them off in emergency situations like fire. You don;t wn't gas going into a burning building...
