Question by Sir Hoochalot: What's the best way to get a "stale water" smell out of a shower curtain? I've had the shower curtain a few months now and this morning I put my nose to it and phewww! It stinks of that horrible damp water smell. You can only smell it if you press your nose to it but I'd rather it was cleaned. What's the best thing to use? I've never actually thought about cleaning it before now but it's just occurred to me I may need to. Is there really no way to clean it? I don't want to have to replace it all the time. Best answer for What's the best way to get a "stale water" smell out of a shower curtain?:

I've read in health magazine's that if you have used your shower curtain for about 3-6 months you need to replace it because the bacteria grows on it and using cleaning products doesn't help much to remove it.

I just wash mine in my washing machine. I hang it back up to drip dry. You will need to transport it back to the bathroom in a laundry basket...It will be very drippy. Wash in warm water. I do not add softener. Do not put it in the dryer. I has worked for me for years.

I soak mine in the bathtub with vinegar - or sometimes with baking soda and hot water - both have odour-neutralizing properties as well as cleansing abilities. I swish it around in the water then rinse it well and re-hang - you don't smell the vinegar when it's dry and you don't have that musty smell anymore - hope this helps

Odo Ban,. Stick it in the washer and add Odo Ban. This stuff kills the Parvo virus. Kills just about anything you can think of. I use it in ALL my wash along with my regular detergent. My clothes come out smelling fresher, my whites are brighter and I don't have to worry about any 'transfer' from the 'dog' wash. Great stuff. I use it all over my house.

Wash the shower curtain with your regular laundry detergent, but add baking soda (about a cup) and a couple scoops of Oxi Clean. Wash the curtain with some towels. The towels will help scrub the curtain. Then hang the curtain back up straight from the washer. This not only cleans the shower curtain, but it will get rid of any mildew that's building up in it, too. -

If it is a mildew smell, bleach works the best. I don't even use soap...just run it in the wash machine (gentle cycle) with hot water and bleach. Hang it out in the sun to dry. Nice sunny day does a lot for smell as well. Ammonia also works wonders! About a half of cup per wash load. This works real well for those towels that get forgotten over night in the wash machine also hehe. Again, hang out to dry on the cloths line on a sunny day. Good luck

Are you shutting the curtain again after you shower or leaving it bunched up. Open a window after you shower it will help ventilate. Replacing the curtain with one of a different material may help too. I hate to say this but lots of things around us smell bad. Don't put your nose to it anymore. h

Curiosity has had its first, successful scoop.

The Mars rover used the scoop Sunday to take a sample of “sand and powdery material” that will be used to clean the insides of the rover's sampling instruments. NASA released an image of the scoop site taken by Curiosity, confirming the first successful collection of a sample of the planet’s soil.

The scoop left a hole 1.8 inches wide on the surface, NASA said Monday.

The rover’s collection and testing of soil on Mars is a critical part of its two-year mission to learn whether the building blocks of life exist â€" or have ever existed â€" on Mars.
