By Chelsea Janes:
Ever wondered what it would be like to jump off a 55-story-high balloon floating 23 miles above Earthâs surface? Who hasnât.
If all goes to plan Monday, youâll be able to ask Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner how it feels.
You may be surprised to hear that the current record for highest skydive has stood since 1960, when a then-Air Force Captain Joe Kittinger jumped 102,800 feet. Interestingly enough, Kittinger is now an advisor for Baumgartnerâs mission, called Red Bull Stratos.
Besides Kittingerâs expert advice on how best to plummet towards Earth, Baumgartner is also lucky enough to have plenty of experience. Just two months ago, in late July, Baumgartner did a âpractice jumpâ from a measly 97,146 feet, reaching a sluggish top speed of 537 miles per hour.
While Baumgartner survived that practice drop unscathed, the custom-built capsule that carries him to his stratospheric drop site did not, requiring repairs that delayed the jump. That same capsule will be used to connect Baumgartner to the 55-story balloon from which heâll leap this time.
If all goes well, Baumgartner will also set records for the highest manned balloon flight, and will have completed the fastest and longest (intentional) freefalls in human history. Pending acceptable weather conditions, his balloon is set to launch from Roswell, N.M. Monday at dawn.
It may not be a very comfortable flight. According to National Geographic, the air at the altitude from which heâll jump is so thin that even the tiniest tear in his airtight, pressurized suit would cause his blood to boil. The article also says Baumgartner runs the risk of spinning at deadly rates on his way down to earth, or being pushed far off course by winds en route. Then thereâs that whole sonic boom thing â" no one knows exactly what that will do, as Felix will be in uncharted territory when it comes to breaking the sound barrier.
