In their last presidential debate Monday night, the two presidential candidates began with Libya and stayed in the Islamic world for almost the entire evening. They talked about “divorcing” Pakistan, arming Syrian rebels and rallying allies against Iran. In this exchange, Romney offered few serious counterproposals to Obama’s current policy, and Obama offered little more about his vision for the next four years. The president promised to keep Americans safe, insisted that the United States needs to “rebuild at home” and attacked Romney as too fickle and inexperienced to run foreign policy. Romney tried to convince people that he is a calm hand who wouldn’t start another boots-on-the-ground war. Romney’s failure to contrast his plans with the president’s record and Obama’s attacks on Romney’s promiscuous attitude toward policy added up to a win for the president.

But, as in previous debates, the victory rings hollow for all the issues that the candidates did not address. Aided by the moderator’s questioning, they spent exactly no time on one of the greatest challenges the world’s governments must face, and foremost among them the United States’. This problem threatens the lives and livelihood of millions, particularly in poor countries, but, left unchecked, it also poses hazards to plenty of Americans and American interests. It will require possibly very expensive choices for developed and developing countries and delicate international negotiations. This challenge is climate change.

Global warming is, well, global. Emissions here count just the same as emissions anywhere else. So, ultimately, facing up to the challenge will require many countries moving in the same direction with enough speed. Without adequately discussing climate change in a global context, the candidates’ foreign policy agendas and even their economic plans, so preoccupied as they are with energy policy, are utterly incomplete.

Romney’s plan is to concentrate on keeping fossil fuels plentiful and domestically sourced. Under his scheme, reducing America’s carbon emissions would be nice, but that wouldn’t be the primary goal. Achieving any emissions cuts of significance with existing technology would be expensive, the argument goes, and since China, India and others might not also clamp down, emissions could continue to build up too-rapidly, regardless of what the United States does. But Romney must explain why American leadership stands to fail in the case of climate change, yet seems to be his solution to every other major global crisis. Why is the best option to wait and see, even though the scientists tell us we shouldn’t?

Obama has to make the mirror-image case. He favored a cap-and-trade bill early in his first term, and he has since shifted to less economically rational methods of wringing carbon out of the economy, such as Environmental Protection Agency regulation, direct subsidies and federal clean energy mandates. These are expensive measures. Why does he think they will make a dent in the global carbon budget? How will China respond? What will India do? Can American action really convince increasingly dirty developing countries to sacrifice some growth now to address a problem that will proceed slowly, over the course of decades? How does he account for the serial failure of international climate negotiations to get major emitters anywhere near where scientists say they should be? What’s the new strategy to improve that record?

The Middle East is important. Pakistan is important. Iran’s nuclear ambitions are important. But so is climate change, and the debates should have reflected that.

Fly fishing smoked on the water means on occasion, to light one up myself. It's kind of hard to pull off without seeming too pretentious, so mostly it's on a warm night at the table in the back yard. We all know that everyone that fly-fished in the 40's and 50's smoked a pipe.

Whale of a Voice
New audio analysis of  whale recordings has revealed that a beluga whale raised in captivity tried to imitate human speech. Scientists believe the whale, named NOC, taught himself to mimic human sounds. NOC would make noises when trainers were in the water near him. “Our observations suggest that the whale had to modify its vocal mechanics in order to make the speech-like sounds,” said Sam Ridgway of the National Marine Mammal Foundation. “Such obvious effort suggests motivation for contact.”

Own a Piece of National Geographic
In its 124 years of existence, the National Geographic Society has compiled a collection of 11.5 million photos and illustrations and, come December, some of its most famous works will be available to the highest bidder. National Geographic is selling part of its collection for the first time in its history, auctioning off 240 pieces at Christie’s. The auction is expected to bring in about $ 3 million and is designed ”to celebrate our legacy … and to give people a chance to buy a little part of this great institution’s history,” Maura Mulvihill, senior vice president of National Geographic’s image and video archives, told The Associated Press.

New York City Subway Record
Stefanie Gray, 24, will protest 2013 MTA far increases by attempting to break the Guinness World Records for the fastest trip through the New York City subway system, the New York Post reported. The current record-holder completed the trek through all 468 stations in 22 hours, 52 minutes and 36 seconds. Gray told the Post that she has not finalized Tuesday’s route, but said she will start at Penn Station and likely take the No. 2 or the No. 3 train. She still doesn’t know whether she’s heading uptown or downtown.

An extended jet of cosmic material traveling near the speed of light emerges from a distant galaxy, looking quite similar to the afterburner pattern of a jet engine on Earth. This galactic jet flow is more than 2 million light-years long, at least 20 times larger than our Milky Way galaxy.

This outflow is coming from a distant quasar that formed roughly 6 billion years ago. Shining with the power of 10 trillion suns, the object is called PKS 0637-752 and is thought to be an early galaxy with a supermassive black hole in its center. As gas and dust fall into the black hole, they are spun around like water going down the drain of a bathtub. The spiraling motion accelerates charged particles like a cosmic version of the Large Hadron Collider, causing them to spew off tons of radiation.

Taken with the CSIRO Australia Telescope Compact Array radio telescope in New South Wales, Australia, this image shows off the radio wavelengths of the galactic jet. The parts that intrigue astronomers are the dot-like structures seen within the jet. These formations, known as “knots,” are not very well understood but seem to represent sections of the jet separated by 160,000 to 360,000 light-years each.

The odd pattern suggests the jet is periodically turning on and off, or that some sort of shockwave within the jet is causing the knots. The latter explanation is similar to fighter jet afterburner exhaust patterns known as “shock diamonds.” Astronomers are looking closely at the data they have about this object to figure out which model best explains the feature. A research paper about the structure appeared on Oct. 20 in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

A recent NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image captures what appears to be one very bright and bizarre galaxy, but is actually the result of a pair of spiral galaxies that resemble our own Milky Way smashing together.

Astronomers have spotted a pair of galaxies smashing into one another, a glimpse of our own galaxy’s fate billions of years from now.

The pair of galaxies, now known as a single galaxy cluster names NGC 2623 and located 300 million light-years away, is the result of series of snapshots obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. Hubble captured what appears to be one very bright and bizarre galaxy, but is actually the result of a pair of spiral galaxies, much like our own Milky Way, smashing together at incredible speeds.

Filled with dust, gas, and young blue star clusters, the opposing tidal tails extend well over 50,000 light-years from the merged nucleus, according to NASA. Likely triggered by the merger, accretion by a supermassive black hole drives activity within the nuclear region, causing the innermost planets and star systems to be ripped apart and flung to different regions of space. The star formation and its active galactic nucleus make NGC 2623 bright across the spectrum.

Not surprisingly, interacting galaxies have a dramatic effect on each other. Studies have revealed that as galaxies approach one another massive amounts of gas are pulled from each galaxy towards the center of the other, until ultimately, the two merge into one massive galaxy. Some mergers (including NGC 2623) can result in an active galactic nucleus, where one of the supermassive black holes found at the centers of the two original galaxies is stirred into action. Matter is pulled toward the black hole, forming an accretion disc. The energy released by the frenzied motion heats up the disc, causing it to emit across a wide swath of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Although the galaxies are currently smashing into each other, stars inside each galaxy are so far apart that they will not collide with other stars during the encounter. However, the stars will be thrown into different orbits around the new galactic center, according to NASA astronomers studying the cosmic collision.

The discovery is likely to present astronomers with a preview of the fate of our own Milky Way galaxy. Our own Milky Way galaxy is destined to get a major makeover during the encounter, which is predicted to happen four billion years from now when we slam into the Andromeda galaxy, known as M31. It is likely the sun will be flung into a new region of our galaxy, but our Earth and solar system are in no danger of being destroyed, say astronomers.

Use reverse osmosis on your drinking water or keep the soft water and drinking water separated. If you soften 80 parts hard water chemically you get 80 parts sodium in your water. This is not good if your on a sodium restricted diet.other chemicals can be used for ion exchange and the calcium ion will be ex changed with a different ion. The sodium ion stays in solution and will not cause scale. If you have health problems you need to know what ion you are consuming. Hard water is healthy To drink. I would like to correct myself. There is a difference in chemically soften water and Ion exchange water. The home softener will leave about 10 parts hard in the water. Ion exchange or reverse osmosis is the only practical option for homes. California is restricting Ion Exchange use due to the salt discharge to the environment. When a Doctor reduces your sodium or salt intake you need to discuss the possible effects of drinking soft water with your doctor. Natural Water hardness ranges from about 60 parts hard to over 180 parts hard. So exchanging the calcium, magnesium and iron ion for sodium ion you will have a range from about 40 parts sodium up and exceeding 170 parts sodium depending on the hardness in your area. By definition "softening" your water means to remove the hardness minerals in the water. The only type of equipment that authentically softens water is an Ion Exchange Water Softener. If you notice, Easy Water calls their system a "water conditioner". The Easy Water systems does not remove anything from the water. If it is the salt you are worried about, on average, a quart of softened water has about the same amount of sodium in it as a slice of white bread. Authentic water softeners are now more efficient because they use meters to count the gallons used in order to initiate a "regeneration", which is the process that a authentic water softener goes through when it is full of hardness minerals. If you are still concerned about the sodium you can add a reverse osmosis drinking system that provides bottled water equivalent water right at your finger tips by removing 94-99% off all the stuff that dissolved in your water, including sodium. Most water treatment companies also have routed or will call salt delivery to keep you from having to carry the 40 or 50 lb bags of salt down to your basement. In summary, I think that the authentic ion exchange water softener is still the only way to give you all the bang for your buck. If you don't like the feel of soft water there are ways to bleed a couple of grains of hardness to your spigots. A recent study (April 2010) performed by the Battelle Memorial Institute, which is a renowned independent testing and research facility dedicated to applied science and technology development, found that an authentic water softener is among the best energy saving appliances in a home.
