NASA's Curiosity rover is really digging in at Rocknest, a patch of Martian sand the robot has been exploring for more than a week.

The photo above, from one of Curiosity's navigation cameras, shows an area of Rocknest sand "with what looks like three bite marks," as project scientist John Grotzinger put it in an October 18 teleconference with reporters. Each mark is a trench left by the scoop on Curiosity's robotic arm, which collects samples for analysis with the rover's onboard instruments.

But before Curiosity fired up its CheMin (Chemistry and Mineralogy) instrument to analyze the soil, it first had to purify its sample-collection instruments using Martian sand as a cleansing abrasive. And having already encountered man-made debris, which may have been strewn about

Question by george: Who is responsible for heating gas bill when lease states "Utilities: Landlord supplies heat and hot water."? I live in Manhattan, New York City and renting an apartment. If the lease states that the landlord supplies heat, does that mean they are responsible for the gas bill which provides the heat or just the infrastructure to move the gas to my apartment? If they are responsible for the gas bill, but unwilling to pay for it, is it grounds to break the lease early? If I pay the rent and start paying the gas bill, would it be grounds to dismiss any right to break the lease because by paying the bills would mean that I accept new terms? Thanks! Best answer for Who is responsible for heating gas bill when lease states "Utilities: Landlord supplies heat and hot water."?:

Answer by jlf
The landlord is responsible for the gas in that case. The infrastructure is part of the apartment itself.

"I live in Manhattan, New York City and renting an apartment. If the lease states that the landlord supplies heat, does that mean they are responsible for the gas bill which provides the heat or just the infrastructure to move the gas to my apartment?" Begin with the end in mind. My property owner pays the gas bill. I pay him rent. Guess where part of that rent goes? The gas bill. The property owner pays that gas bill with my rent check! If my neighbors decide to heat their homes hotter than the sun then I help pay for that too! One way or another you are going to pay for the gas and electric where you live. It doesn't matter where you live or who gets the bill and pays it. You will pay for it. So, if you decide to break this lease what will you gain? You can move into a different apartment but the gas rates won't change will they? It if costs $ 1.00 per BTU in one place in Manhattan then it will cost $ 1.00 per BTU is some other place in Manhattan. If the property owner pays the gas through your rent check then my biggest worry would be how hot do your neighbors like to keep their homes? If you can tolerate it on the cooler range of the temperature scale and your neighbors want to melt iron and press it into steel then do you want to help pay for that?

the landlord pays the gas bill in that case.

If the lease states that they provide heat, then they pay the gas bill, not you. Your rent is supposed to cover those costs. However, whether or not this is grounds to break the lease depends on your city and state laws. Here's a resource on tenants rights in New York: http://www.tenant.net/
