[fornadablog.blogspot.com], Sun unleashes intense X-class flare; active sunspot region rotating towards Earth - Washington Post (blog)

Via NASA: “A solar flare on Oct. 22, 2012, as captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)”
The sun belted out the most powerful type of solar flare Monday night, known as an X-class flare (the weaker flare classes are M-class, medium-sized, and C-class, small-sized). It was the latest in a flurry of 4 flares hurled out by the sun since the weekend.

Fortunately, the X-class flare was not directed at Earth. But space weather forecasters caution the very active sunspot region - known as AR1598 - responsible for these flares is slowly rotating towards Earth in the coming days.

“[T]he potential for continued activity remains so stay tuned for updates as Region 1598 makes its way across the visible disk.,” writes NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

Monday night’s flare, rated X1.8, was the 15th X-class flare emitted during the current solar cycle, which began February 15, 2011.

The nunber associated with the flare class indicates strength. An X3 flare is three times as strong as an X1 flare.

“The largest X-class flare in this cycle was an X6.9 on Aug. 9, 2011,” NASA writes. “ This is the 7th X-class flare in 2012 with the largest being an X5.4 flare on March 7.”

No earth-bound coronal mass ejection (CME), or burst of plasma - was associated with Monday night’s flare. Earth-directed CMEs can produce aurora ( northern lights) and geomagnetic storms capable of disrupting satellite communications and the electrical grid.

The flare did produce a short-lived high-frequency radio blackout.

NASA's Curiosity rover is really digging in at Rocknest, a patch of Martian sand the robot has been exploring for more than a week.

The photo above, from one of Curiosity's navigation cameras, shows an area of Rocknest sand "with what looks like three bite marks," as project scientist John Grotzinger put it in an October 18 teleconference with reporters. Each mark is a trench left by the scoop on Curiosity's robotic arm, which collects samples for analysis with the rover's onboard instruments.

But before Curiosity fired up its CheMin (Chemistry and Mineralogy) instrument to analyze the soil, it first had to purify its sample-collection instruments using Martian sand as a cleansing abrasive. And having already encountered man-made debris, which may have been strewn about

Question by george: Who is responsible for heating gas bill when lease states "Utilities: Landlord supplies heat and hot water."? I live in Manhattan, New York City and renting an apartment. If the lease states that the landlord supplies heat, does that mean they are responsible for the gas bill which provides the heat or just the infrastructure to move the gas to my apartment? If they are responsible for the gas bill, but unwilling to pay for it, is it grounds to break the lease early? If I pay the rent and start paying the gas bill, would it be grounds to dismiss any right to break the lease because by paying the bills would mean that I accept new terms? Thanks! Best answer for Who is responsible for heating gas bill when lease states "Utilities: Landlord supplies heat and hot water."?:

Answer by jlf
The landlord is responsible for the gas in that case. The infrastructure is part of the apartment itself.

Answer by Ranger4402
"I live in Manhattan, New York City and renting an apartment. If the lease states that the landlord supplies heat, does that mean they are responsible for the gas bill which provides the heat or just the infrastructure to move the gas to my apartment?" Begin with the end in mind. My property owner pays the gas bill. I pay him rent. Guess where part of that rent goes? The gas bill. The property owner pays that gas bill with my rent check! If my neighbors decide to heat their homes hotter than the sun then I help pay for that too! One way or another you are going to pay for the gas and electric where you live. It doesn't matter where you live or who gets the bill and pays it. You will pay for it. So, if you decide to break this lease what will you gain? You can move into a different apartment but the gas rates won't change will they? It if costs $ 1.00 per BTU in one place in Manhattan then it will cost $ 1.00 per BTU is some other place in Manhattan. If the property owner pays the gas through your rent check then my biggest worry would be how hot do your neighbors like to keep their homes? If you can tolerate it on the cooler range of the temperature scale and your neighbors want to melt iron and press it into steel then do you want to help pay for that?

Answer by David Z
the landlord pays the gas bill in that case.

Answer by Jodith
If the lease states that they provide heat, then they pay the gas bill, not you. Your rent is supposed to cover those costs. However, whether or not this is grounds to break the lease depends on your city and state laws. Here's a resource on tenants rights in New York: http://www.tenant.net/

>>> well, can whales talk? a team of marine biologists in san diego is convinced that a beluga whale was at least trying. nbc's mara schiavocampo is here with more on that story. mara , good morning to you.

>> reporter: good morning. this is such a fascinating story. the whale spent most of his life amusing an amazing marine biologists , and the team has spent decades studying him saying this whale was definitely different than the rest. these sounds may not seem clear to a lot of people, but to some marine biologists what you're hearing is a whale mimicking the human voice . the star of this research project was a beautiful white whale named noisy and he was found in manitoba, canada and later flown to the national marine mammal center for a study. the study team first began to notice human-like sounds in the dolphin and whale enclosure pack in 1984 , sounds they soon figured out had come from the whale .

>> he was the only one who did it to lower the pitch of his voice quite drastically. it was my impression and that of just about everybody that heard it that he was trying to imitate the human voice .

>> reporter: convinced they had no ordinary whale in the study group ridgeway and his group built a special underwater listening platform to capture the sounds and voices coming from the whale .

>> we concluded the whale was making a sound that was very unlike his own normal whale sounds and unlike that of other whales, and he was going to great effort to do this.

>> reporter: their findings reveal a rhythm similar to human speech . frequencies much closer to that of the human voice . several octaves lower than typical whale sounds.

>> yes.

>> reporter: in the 1973 movie " day of the dolphin ," george c. scott teaches a pair of dolphins to speak and understand english. but while some animals and mammals may sound like they are communicating with us, ridgeway says we may never know for sure if the whale actually understood what he was saying.

>> we didn't think that the whale knew what he was saying, and now we may have been wrong about that.

>> reporter: sadly the whale died five years ago, but scientists will continue studying his voice. now at least we know what whales think we sound like.

>> we don't know what he was saying. mara , thanks.

Question by rishay87: How do you plant something in "Water"? Im doing a project to see whether plants grow better in soil or water. The only thing is- how do you plant something in water? Do you just drop a seed in the water, or do you do something else in the cup/plant bed? Best answer for How do you plant something in "Water"?:

Answer by WhachooSay
It's easier to root things in water, using a portion of the root that grew already. Probably you've seen a sweet potato cut in half and living in water, growing new roots and leaves. Many herbs root well in water too. The top of a carrot will!

Answer by renpen
Look up hydroponics. I believe that you will have to start the plants before putting them in water.

Answer by egan
A water loving plants will grow directly in water from seeds to cuttings. Even not water loving plants can grow on water. I've tried it so many times. Countless times and I succeeded. Since it's your project, do experiment. Don't be afraid. It is the fun part of it. Someone told me that I can't grow African violet and Phal orchids on water, I proved them wrong. I did! Have fun!

It could be the muffled sound of singing in the shower or that sing-songy indecipherable voice from the Muppets' Swedish Chef.

Surprisingly, scientists said the audio they captured was a whale imitating people. In fact, the whale song sounded so eerily human that divers initially thought it was a human voice.

Handlers at the National Marine Mammal Foundation in San Diego heard mumbling in 1984 coming from a tank containing whales and dolphins that sounded like two people chatting far away.

It wasn't until one day, after a diver surfaced from the tank and asked, "Who told me to get out?" did researchers realize the garble came from a captive male Beluga whale. For several years, they recorded its spontaneous sounds while it was underwater and when it surfaced.

An acoustic analysis revealed the human-like sounds were several octaves lower than typical whale calls. The research was published online Monday in Current Biology.

Scientists think the whale's close proximity to people allowed it to listen to and mimic human conversation. It did so by changing the pressure in its nasal cavities. After four years of copying people, it went back to sounding like a whale, emitting high-pitched noises. It died five years ago.

Dolphins and parrots have been taught to mimic the patterns of human speech, but it's rare for an animal to do it spontaneously.

The study is not the first time a whale has sounded human. Scientists who have studied sounds of white whales in the wild sometimes heard what sounded like shouting children. Caretakers at the Vancouver Aquarium in Canada previously said they heard one of the white whales say its name.

Amazon describes the book as: This book has the potential to profoundly transform your world view. Using high-speed photography, Dr. Masaru Emoto discovered that crystals formed in frozen water reveal changes when specific, concentrated thoughts are directed toward them. He found that water from clear springs and water that has been exposed to loving words shows brilliant, complex, and colorful snowflake patterns. In contrast, polluted water, or water exposed to negative thoughts, forms incomplete, asymmetrical patterns with dull colors. Obama won the third presidential debate, but what about climate change? - Washington Post (blog) [fornadablog.blogspot.com]

[fornadablog.blogspot.com], Obama won the third presidential debate, but what about climate change? - Washington Post (blog)

In their last presidential debate Monday night, the two presidential candidates began with Libya and stayed in the Islamic world for almost the entire evening. They talked about “divorcing” Pakistan, arming Syrian rebels and rallying allies against Iran. In this exchange, Romney offered few serious counterproposals to Obama’s current policy, and Obama offered little more about his vision for the next four years. The president promised to keep Americans safe, insisted that the United States needs to “rebuild at home” and attacked Romney as too fickle and inexperienced to run foreign policy. Romney tried to convince people that he is a calm hand who wouldn’t start another boots-on-the-ground war. Romney’s failure to contrast his plans with the president’s record and Obama’s attacks on Romney’s promiscuous attitude toward policy added up to a win for the president.

But, as in previous debates, the victory rings hollow for all the issues that the candidates did not address. Aided by the moderator’s questioning, they spent exactly no time on one of the greatest challenges the world’s governments must face, and foremost among them the United States’. This problem threatens the lives and livelihood of millions, particularly in poor countries, but, left unchecked, it also poses hazards to plenty of Americans and American interests. It will require possibly very expensive choices for developed and developing countries and delicate international negotiations. This challenge is climate change.

Global warming is, well, global. Emissions here count just the same as emissions anywhere else. So, ultimately, facing up to the challenge will require many countries moving in the same direction with enough speed. Without adequately discussing climate change in a global context, the candidates’ foreign policy agendas and even their economic plans, so preoccupied as they are with energy policy, are utterly incomplete.

Romney’s plan is to concentrate on keeping fossil fuels plentiful and domestically sourced. Under his scheme, reducing America’s carbon emissions would be nice, but that wouldn’t be the primary goal. Achieving any emissions cuts of significance with existing technology would be expensive, the argument goes, and since China, India and others might not also clamp down, emissions could continue to build up too-rapidly, regardless of what the United States does. But Romney must explain why American leadership stands to fail in the case of climate change, yet seems to be his solution to every other major global crisis. Why is the best option to wait and see, even though the scientists tell us we shouldn’t?

Obama has to make the mirror-image case. He favored a cap-and-trade bill early in his first term, and he has since shifted to less economically rational methods of wringing carbon out of the economy, such as Environmental Protection Agency regulation, direct subsidies and federal clean energy mandates. These are expensive measures. Why does he think they will make a dent in the global carbon budget? How will China respond? What will India do? Can American action really convince increasingly dirty developing countries to sacrifice some growth now to address a problem that will proceed slowly, over the course of decades? How does he account for the serial failure of international climate negotiations to get major emitters anywhere near where scientists say they should be? What’s the new strategy to improve that record?

The Middle East is important. Pakistan is important. Iran’s nuclear ambitions are important. But so is climate change, and the debates should have reflected that.

Fly fishing smoked on the water means on occasion, to light one up myself. It's kind of hard to pull off without seeming too pretentious, so mostly it's on a warm night at the table in the back yard. We all know that everyone that fly-fished in the 40's and 50's smoked a pipe.

Whale of a Voice
New audio analysis of  whale recordings has revealed that a beluga whale raised in captivity tried to imitate human speech. Scientists believe the whale, named NOC, taught himself to mimic human sounds. NOC would make noises when trainers were in the water near him. “Our observations suggest that the whale had to modify its vocal mechanics in order to make the speech-like sounds,” said Sam Ridgway of the National Marine Mammal Foundation. “Such obvious effort suggests motivation for contact.”

[fornadablog.blogspot.com], 2-Million-Light-Year-Long Galactic Emission Looks Like Jet Afterburner - Wired (blog)

An extended jet of cosmic material traveling near the speed of light emerges from a distant galaxy, looking quite similar to the afterburner pattern of a jet engine on Earth. This galactic jet flow is more than 2 million light-years long, at least 20 times larger than our Milky Way galaxy.

This outflow is coming from a distant quasar that formed roughly 6 billion years ago. Shining with the power of 10 trillion suns, the object is called PKS 0637-752 and is thought to be an early galaxy with a supermassive black hole in its center. As gas and dust fall into the black hole, they are spun around like water going down the drain of a bathtub. The spiraling motion accelerates charged particles like a cosmic version of the Large Hadron Collider, causing them to spew off tons of radiation.

Taken with the CSIRO Australia Telescope Compact Array radio telescope in New South Wales, Australia, this image shows off the radio wavelengths of the galactic jet. The parts that intrigue astronomers are the dot-like structures seen within the jet. These formations, known as “knots,” are not very well understood but seem to represent sections of the jet separated by 160,000 to 360,000 light-years each.

The odd pattern suggests the jet is periodically turning on and off, or that some sort of shockwave within the jet is causing the knots. The latter explanation is similar to fighter jet afterburner exhaust patterns known as “shock diamonds.” Astronomers are looking closely at the data they have about this object to figure out which model best explains the feature. A research paper about the structure appeared on Oct. 20 in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

A recent NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image captures what appears to be one very bright and bizarre galaxy, but is actually the result of a pair of spiral galaxies that resemble our own Milky Way smashing together.

Astronomers have spotted a pair of galaxies smashing into one another, a glimpse of our own galaxy’s fate billions of years from now.

The pair of galaxies, now known as a single galaxy cluster names NGC 2623 and located 300 million light-years away, is the result of series of snapshots obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. Hubble captured what appears to be one very bright and bizarre galaxy, but is actually the result of a pair of spiral galaxies, much like our own Milky Way, smashing together at incredible speeds.

Filled with dust, gas, and young blue star clusters, the opposing tidal tails extend well over 50,000 light-years from the merged nucleus, according to NASA. Likely triggered by the merger, accretion by a supermassive black hole drives activity within the nuclear region, causing the innermost planets and star systems to be ripped apart and flung to different regions of space. The star formation and its active galactic nucleus make NGC 2623 bright across the spectrum.

Not surprisingly, interacting galaxies have a dramatic effect on each other. Studies have revealed that as galaxies approach one another massive amounts of gas are pulled from each galaxy towards the center of the other, until ultimately, the two merge into one massive galaxy. Some mergers (including NGC 2623) can result in an active galactic nucleus, where one of the supermassive black holes found at the centers of the two original galaxies is stirred into action. Matter is pulled toward the black hole, forming an accretion disc. The energy released by the frenzied motion heats up the disc, causing it to emit across a wide swath of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Although the galaxies are currently smashing into each other, stars inside each galaxy are so far apart that they will not collide with other stars during the encounter. However, the stars will be thrown into different orbits around the new galactic center, according to NASA astronomers studying the cosmic collision.

The discovery is likely to present astronomers with a preview of the fate of our own Milky Way galaxy. Our own Milky Way galaxy is destined to get a major makeover during the encounter, which is predicted to happen four billion years from now when we slam into the Andromeda galaxy, known as M31. It is likely the sun will be flung into a new region of our galaxy, but our Earth and solar system are in no danger of being destroyed, say astronomers.

Question by fudgypup: what's the deal with these electronic water conditioning systems like "Easy Water?" Do they really work? Is this just a gimmick? If the water's coming out of the tap softened then where are the minerals going? It's just a wire connected to the pipe. Seems bogus. Best answer for what's the deal with these electronic water conditioning systems like "Easy Water?" Do they really work?:

Answer by chaindropz
It’s debatable http://watertechonline.com/detail.asp?Parent_ID=140291 Do not drink the chemically softened water. Use reverse osmosis on your drinking water or keep the soft water and drinking water separated. If you soften 80 parts hard water chemically you get 80 parts sodium in your water. This is not good if your on a sodium restricted diet.other chemicals can be used for ion exchange and the calcium ion will be ex changed with a different ion. The sodium ion stays in solution and will not cause scale. If you have health problems you need to know what ion you are consuming. Hard water is healthy To drink. I would like to correct myself. There is a difference in chemically soften water and Ion exchange water. The home softener will leave about 10 parts hard in the water. Ion exchange or reverse osmosis is the only practical option for homes. California is restricting Ion Exchange use due to the salt discharge to the environment. When a Doctor reduces your sodium or salt intake you need to discuss the possible effects of drinking soft water with your doctor. Natural Water hardness ranges from about 60 parts hard to over 180 parts hard. So exchanging the calcium, magnesium and iron ion for sodium ion you will have a range from about 40 parts sodium up and exceeding 170 parts sodium depending on the hardness in your area. The only way to know is to run a hardness test on your water source. http://water.usgs.gov/owq/hardness-alkalinity.html Industrial softening An industrial ion exchange water softener will reduce the hardness to Zero. It was a mistake when I used the term chemical softening so I will attempt to clear that up. Mostly industry but some cities have been known to chemically soften water There is no exchange in chemically softened water. Chemically lime softened water will only reduce the water at best to 29 parts hard. The hot lime process will reduce the hardness to 8 parts hard http://www.gewater.com/handbook/ext_treatment/ch_7_precipitation.jsp http://pubs.ext.vt.edu/356/356-490/356-490.html

Answer by Tomcat
Definitely bogus. http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/plumbing/msg0107095411858.html

Answer by Edwin
By definition "softening" your water means to remove the hardness minerals in the water. The only type of equipment that authentically softens water is an Ion Exchange Water Softener. If you notice, Easy Water calls their system a "water conditioner". The Easy Water systems does not remove anything from the water. If it is the salt you are worried about, on average, a quart of softened water has about the same amount of sodium in it as a slice of white bread. Authentic water softeners are now more efficient because they use meters to count the gallons used in order to initiate a "regeneration", which is the process that a authentic water softener goes through when it is full of hardness minerals. If you are still concerned about the sodium you can add a reverse osmosis drinking system that provides bottled water equivalent water right at your finger tips by removing 94-99% off all the stuff that dissolved in your water, including sodium. Most water treatment companies also have routed or will call salt delivery to keep you from having to carry the 40 or 50 lb bags of salt down to your basement. In summary, I think that the authentic ion exchange water softener is still the only way to give you all the bang for your buck. If you don't like the feel of soft water there are ways to bleed a couple of grains of hardness to your spigots. A recent study (April 2010) performed by the Battelle Memorial Institute, which is a renowned independent testing and research facility dedicated to applied science and technology development, found that an authentic water softener is among the best energy saving appliances in a home. 2012-10-21T08:52:00Z Missoula men help move shuttleBy Jenna Cederberg of the Missoulian Mtstandard.com

MISSOULA (AP) â€" The Missoula engineers in charge of squeezing space shuttle Endeavour through the crowded streets of Los Angeles used every trick in their extensive playbook to get the job done.

“There’s lots of places you would not have wanted to have your finger between the orbiter and trees or poles,” Gordon Lofts said Monday. “There were some incredibly close tolerances. Luckily, we had a very experienced and skilled crew that was able to get it done.”

Several times during last weekend’s move, the shuttle’s 78-foot wingspan was wider than the route ahead, forcing operators to accommodate for as much as 1 1/2 feet of space. Other times, enthusiastic crowds of spectators gathered to watch the historic move had to be shooed away as operators scoped the route for the best path around the next obstacle.

“A lot of places, you’d have to get one wing through an obstruction â€" it would have to clear the obstruction before the other wing could get through,” Steve Mitchell said.

It took a crew of thousands almost three days to coax Endeavour along the 14-mile route from Los Angeles International Airport to its permanent home at the California Science Center. Endeavour left LAX late Thursday night and arrived at the museum Sunday night.

On Monday morning, Mitchell, Gordon Lofts and Mike Lofts â€" all of Missoula â€" worked in the shadow of the shuttle as they prepared it to be taken off the trailers that ferried it through south L.A.

The three experienced trailer operators were among a handful of people from Sarens International’s Missoula office who helped move Endeavour. Sarens was contracted as the transporter for the move, and employees worked for months planning and engineering the route.

During the move, Endeavour barely went faster than 2 mph.

The trailers that Sarens’ operators used aren’t made for going more than

5 mph. They’re run via a wireless remote that talks to power packs and computers throughout the trailer to help it go up, down, left or right, Gordon Lofts said.

The remote is controlled by one operator who is consulting two other operators scouting along the route. Sarens provided 24-hour monitoring of the move. Trailer operators worked groups of three on 12-hour shifts throughout the move.

Each of the trailer operators has at least a decade of experience moving unusually large objects through tight spaces.

“All that was training for this â€" we used all the training we knew,” Lofts said.

Endeavour flew 25 space missions and was the replacement for the Challenger shuttle, which exploded in 1986, killing the seven-member crew. Endeavour flew its last mission in 2011. Gordon Lofts and Mike Lofts witnessed that launch from a job site in southern Florida.

The significance of the move made it an unforgettable experience, they said.

They likened the shuttle’s travel through the city to a parade route, teeming with people day and night. Some had parties to celebrate the shuttle’s passage. Others wore costumes and waved signs.

When the shuttle inched past a particularly difficult obstruction, the crowd went wild, Mike Lofts said.

“When you’re sitting there working an obstruction and you finally get by, the whole crowd is just erupting and cheering,” he said. “You had multiple of those. You get by (an obstruction) and you move again â€" the crowd goes wild. It’s like you’re at a concert,” Mike Lofts said.

Despite the shuttle’s ability to blast through the Earth’s atmosphere and orbit the planet at speeds of up to 17,000 mph, the Sarens crew quickly discovered it was a delicate piece of machinery.

“Bottom tiles are made of glass â€" they thought our heads were softer than the hard hats so we had to take the hard hats off while working under it,” Mitchell said.

In the end, the Sarens crew got the shuttle to the California Science Center without any dents or dings, although it was about 10 hours late. That was because of several unexpected obstacles â€" from trees to utility poles to crowds â€" along the route.

Again, the crew credited experience and the thousands of other people who helped in the move as the key to finishing the job.

The high-profile move got the Missoula men quite a bit of media

attention.

Father-and-son pair Gordon and Mike Lofts were interviewed for almost an hour by a crew from CBS. That interview was boiled down to “two to three seconds” of air time on the national broadcast Friday night, Gordon Lofts said.

Mitchell was quoted in a Los Angeles Times story about on the move. And they’re all in hundreds of photos taken of the shuttle during the move.

All agreed moving the Endeavour was the highest-profile job they’ll ever take on.

There still are days of work left before the Endeavour job is done, Lofts said. Nonetheless, the operators count the route as the shuttle’s 26th successful “mission.” They’ll all receive patches made by the California Science Center commemorating the final mission.

The California Science Center is

set to open its Endeavour exhibit on

Oct. 30.

The Orionid meteor shower overnight was difficult to see in many parts of urban Southern California, but those away from the city lights captured images of the event.

The shower, which occurs each October and was at peak visibility from Saturday after midnight to dawn Sunday morning, is the result of dust from Halley's Comet hitting Earth's atmosphere as the planet travels through space in its orbit around the sun. At peak time, experts expected 20 or so meteors to flash across the sky each hour.

Every year around mid-October, debris from the comet hits the edge of Earth's atmosphere. The debris is moving really fast -- roughly 148,000 mph -- and burns up when it hits the atmosphere, causing the flash of light we see.

Q&A: Orionid meteor show explained

Cloudy skies and a lot of light made the shower hard to see in the L.A. area. Some people went into the mountains and deserts, including Joshua Tree, to take a look.

Graceful in their turnings, spiral galaxies were thought to have reached their current state billions of years ago. A study of hundreds of galaxies, however, upsets that notion revealing that spiral galaxies, like the Andromeda Galaxy and our own Milky Way, have continued to change.

“Astronomers thought disk galaxies in the nearby universe had settled into their present form by about 8 billion years ago, with little additional development since,” said Susan Kassin, an astronomer at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and the study’s lead researcher in a press release. “The trend we’ve observed instead shows the opposite, that galaxies were steadily changing over this time period.”

Astronomers used the twin 10-meter earth-bound W.M. Keck Observatory atop Hawaii’s Mauna Kea volcano and NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope to study 544 star-forming galaxies. Farther back in time, galaxies tend to be very different, say astronomers, with random and disorganized motions. Nearer to the present, star-forming galaxies look like well-ordered disk-shaped systems. Rotation in these galaxies trumps other internal, random motions. These galaxies are gradually settling into well-behaved disks with the most massive galaxies always showing higher organization.

The sampling of galaxies studied, from the Deep Extragalactic Evolutionary Probe 2 (DEEP2) Redshift Survey, ranged between 2 billion and 8 billion light-years from Earth with masses between 0.3 percent to 100 percent that of our own Milky Way Galaxy. Researchers looked at all galaxies in this time range with emission lines bright enough to determine internal motions. Researchers focused on emission lines characteristically emitted by gas within the galaxy. The emission lines not only tell scientists about the elements that make up the galaxies but also red shifting of emission lines contains information on the internal motions and distance.

“Previous studies removed galaxies that did not look like the well-ordered rotating disks now common in the universe today,” said co-author Benjamin Weiner, an astronomer at the University of Arizona in Tucson. “By neglecting them, these studies examined only those rare galaxies in the distant universe that are well-behaved and concluded that galaxies didn’t change.”

In the past 8 billion years, mergers between galaxies, both large and small, has decreased. So has the overall rate of star formation and associated disruptions due to supernovae explosions. Both factors may play a role in the newly found trend, say scientists.

The Milky Way Galaxy may have gone through the same chaotic growing and changing as the galaxies in the DEEP2 sample before settling into its present state at just about the same time the Sun and Earth were forming, say team scientists. By observing the pattern, astronomers can now adjust computer simulations of galaxy evolution until they replicate the observations. Then the hunt will be on to determine the physical processes responsible for the trend.

A paper detailing the findings will be published in the Oct. 20 Astrophysical Journal.

[fornadablog.blogspot.com], Amazing Time-Lapse Shows Space Shuttle Endeavour's Final Journey - Wired (blog)

It may not have been rocketing to space but the Space Shuttle Endeavour’s final journey, a 12-mile trek through Los Angeles to the city’s California Science Center for permanent display, was one of its most spectacular.

This film, titled “Mission 26,” captures the entire process. It is the handiwork of a team of photographers led by Matthew Givot, who organized a four-day tailgate of the shuttle to watch its awesome ride from LAX to the museum in a series of photographs and videos. Endeavour crawled at a steady pace to give time for construction crews to make sure the spaceship didn’t snag any power lines or trees. Thousands of people turned out to see the beautiful machine, one of the most complex pieces of hardware ever built.

“This has been an amazing experience that I will never forget,” Givot wrote on the video’s Vimeo page. “My hope is that this film will show you the amount of dedicated people and teamwork that it took to get the Endeavour to its new home.”

Endeavour is the youngest of NASA’s shuttle fleet, and started operations in 1992. It flew 25 times into space and completed its last mission in May 2011. During that time, it helped built the International Space Station and delivered scientific experiments and crews to the station over its life.

Answer by lol_grrl
Is the filter clean?

Answer by Dani B
What kind of filter do you have? If it is a HOB (hang-on-back) power filter, you need to check the impeller. This is the little wheel that turns very fast to make the filter suck water. Sometimes this impeller gets worm out and needs replaced (pretty cheap), or sometimes plants, or a hair, or something clogs it up. Good luck!

Answer by Saucy
I agree with the above posters. If you haven't been cleaning your filter monthly with your filter pad, it can get severely clogged and actually cause damage to the impeller. So go ahead, take it apart, clean it and put it back together. If that doesn't work, try a new impeller.

[fornadablog.blogspot.com], Mars rover starts 'to eat dirt' - BBC News

ScoopsThe rover has spent the past fortnight practising its scooping technique

Nasa's Curiosity rover has ingested its first Martian soil sample.

The robot has taken a pinch of dust into the CheMin instrument, one of its two big onboard analytical tools.

It is a key moment for the $ 2.6bn mission - Curiosity's internal apparatus will play a central role in its investigation of the Red Planet.

"The most important thing about our mobile laboratory is that it eats dirt - that's what we live on," chief scientist John Grotzinger told the BBC.

CheMin provides definitive mineralogy â€" it uses X-ray diffraction to identify and quantify the minerals present in the rocky material that has been swallowed.

Engineers received confirmation on Thursday that the sample was accepted by the instrument, and details of the analysis may be available as early as next week.

The dust is the lightest and finest material the rover has been able to pick up with its scoop and system of sieves and sorting chambers.

It should provide researchers with the broadest view of what makes up the soil covering the planet’s surface.

The size of the grains â€" about a tenth of a millimetre in diameter, and smaller â€" makes them sufficiently tiny to be blown vast distances in the Martian wind.

“These are particles that travel regionally, if not globally,” said Prof Grotzinger, who is affiliated to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

“We see these globe-encircling dust storms and we believe that there are grains that are deposited uniformly all over Mars.

Sample traySome of the fine dust delivered to CheMin was also dropped on to an inspection tray

“[We're] going to be able to analyse finally, once and for all, the mineral composition of this global component â€" not of the local component; not of the bits and pieces of the rocks that are around [our landing site], but the stuff that swirls around the planet; and that’s why this is going to be such a cool measurement.”

Curiosity landed on the floor of Gale Crater, a huge depression on Mars' equator, on 6 August (GMT).

Since then, it has rolled more than 480m (1,590ft) to the east to try to get to a location referred to as Glenelg, a place satellite images have indicated is an interesting junction between three different geological terrains.

It is all but upon Glenelg now, but has paused in the drive these past two weeks to practise scooping and sorting soil samples on a patch of ground the rover team has nicknamed Rocknest.

The robot needed to run material through its mechanism several times to scrub any residual Earthy contamination that may have been coating surfaces; and the sand and dust at Rocknest appeared to have the right properties for the job.

On completion of this cleaning process, it became possible to deliver a sample for test in the CheMin (Chemistry & Mineralogy) tool, and subsequently, in the coming days, to the other big lab in Curiosity’s belly â€" Sam, or the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument.

Bright fleckBright fleck: Scientists concluded the item was probably natural Martian material

Sam will look for the presence of organics - carbon-rich molecules that may tell us something about the possibilities for life on the Red Planet both now and in the distant past.

Engineers have been concerned at the number of small pieces of man-made debris they are seeing around the rover. These are likely bits of plastic that have fallen off the vehicle, or were deposited on to it by its landing crane and have since dropped to the ground during the drive.

The team is not worried that these debris items indicate a major breakage on Curiosity; rather, the issue is that the objects could accidentally be picked up in the scoop and be ingested by the laboratories, seriously skewing their analyses.

Engineers commanded the rover to dump one scoop when a bright fleck was seen during the dig.

However, later imaging suggested this item was probably natural Martian material, and the scientists will now hit the 2mm-wide grain with the ChemCam laser spectrometer to probe its properties further and to work out why it appears so much brighter than all the material around it.

RocknestRocknest: A patch of sand and dust just downhill from a cluster of dark rocks has been the first scoop site

Mars rover (Nasa)

  • (A) Curiosity will trundle around its landing site looking for interesting rock features to study. Its top speed is about 4cm/s
  • (B) This mission has 17 cameras. They will identify particular targets, and a laser will zap those rocks to probe their chemistry
  • (C) If the signal is significant, Curiosity will swing over instruments on its arm for close-up investigation. These include a microscope
  • (D) Samples drilled from rock, or scooped from the soil, can be delivered to two hi-tech analysis labs inside the rover body
  • (E) The results are sent to Earth through antennas on the rover deck. Return commands tell the rover where it should drive next

For those who cannot see the Orionid meteor shower in person, NASA has images streaming on the Internet.

The live feed is being filmed at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. Officials have warned the shower will be hard to see in urban areas because of light pollution.

The shower, which occurs each October and will be at peak visibility from after midnight Saturday night to dawn Sunday morning, is the result of dust from Halley's Comet hitting Earth's atmosphere as the planet travels through space in its orbit around the sun. At peak time, 20 or so meteors are expected to flash across the sky each hour.

Every year around mid-October, debris from the comet hits the edge of Earth's atmosphere. The debris is moving really fast -- roughly 148,000 mph -- and burns up when it hits the atmosphere, causing the flash of light we see.

Q&A: Orionid meteor show explained

Heavy cloud cover is expected overnight in much of the Los Angeles area, but for people in clear spots: Experts said the most important advice to those hoping to see the meteor shower is to get away from bright city lights.

"My first advice for seeing it in L.A. would be to get out of L.A.," Bill Cooke, who runs NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, joked during an interview Friday. He said those watching from downtown and other heavily illuminated areas might be able to see some meteors but would miss most of them.

"If you are near bright city lights, you'll only be able to see the brightest meteors," he said.

The best bet for L.A.-area residents is to head out of the urban areas and into the hills, said Laura Danly, curator at the Griffith Observatory.

"One good bet would be Mulholland Drive," Danly said Friday. "If you're a little more ambitious, you could get a great view by going up to Mt. Wilson or Mt. Baldy."

People who would rather watch from home, Danly said, should turn off all house lights and try to get their neighbors to engage in a blackout as well. "Anywhere that's removed from artificial lights should lend [itself] to a good view," she said.

And how to watch it? Cook says the best way to see the shower is to lay flat on your back and look straight up. Use just your eyes -- you don’t need binoculars or a telescope -- because the meteors can appear anywhere in the sky, so you need a broad view. It usually takes about three minutes for a person's eyes to "dark adapt," so if you want to see the shower, you need to commit to spending a good hour outside.
