Scientists of Indian origin have played a crucial role in the launch of Curiosity, the latest rover sent on Mars by NASA, Jitendra Mehta, a non-resident Gujarati (NRG) who is a consultant to the American space agency, said Monday.
“Indian scientists have been very successful at NASA and are holding very high positions there. Ashwin Vasavda, a scientist of Gujarati origin, is deputy project scientist for Curiosity. Anita Sengupta, also of Indian origin, has spent four years in designing the rover,†Mehta, chief mission assurance manager and technical consultant to the director of astrophysics at Jet Propulsion Laboratory of NASA in California, told The Indian Express on the sidelines of a talk show here.
Mehta (64) has his origin in Gadhala village of Gadhda taluka in Bhavnagar district and has been working with NASA since 1975. As the chief mission assurance manager, he is responsible to ensure adherence to design principles in missions and their time-bound accomplishment. He is also looking after hardware and software quality control for spacecraft.
“The Curiosity mission has been very challenging. Due to requirements of sophistication in technology and complexities involved in landing on the the red planet, we took four years to design the rover. This is two years longer than usual time,†Mehta, a system engineer, said.
The landing of Curiosity on the surface of Mars on August 5 is considered a marvel of sophisticated technology. Scientists used a technology named sky crane with the conventional parachute to land the rover on the Martian surface. The scientist had also incorporated eight throttle controllable rocket engines in the entry, descent and landing (EDL) maneuver to control fall of Curiosity on that planet.
